For the Danish brand Stanwell, Germany has always been the most important market, as German pipe smokers were devoted to the brand.

Founder Poul Nielsen laid the foundation for this in 1946 by breaking entirely new ground. He made use of the expertise of local pipe makers, most notably Sixten Ivarsson, and gave them maximum freedom in reinterpreting classic English shapes. Through small and subtle modifications, a completely new and distinctive design language was created. Danish Design was born and went on to conquer the world.

Many Stanwell models still enjoy cult status today. Over the decades, this resulted in a vast portfolio of iconic shapes. While smaller pipes are traditionally preferred on the Danish domestic market, the company has always remained open to the preferences of different export markets and has adapted to their specific needs. In Germany, for example, large bowls suitable for 9 mm filters have long been especially popular.
