The harp holds a special place in Irish cultural history. Harp players enjoyed great prestige — both among the common people and at the royal courts. Stories and poetry were accompanied by their enchanting melodies, and bards often sat at the same table as the kings. Not rarely, they even served as important advisers to the rulers in social and political matters.

When the English later conquered the island, the Irish harp — as an expression of the Irish spirit and identity — became a thorn in their side. In the 17th century, the Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell ordered not only the destruction of monasteries and harbours, but also the destruction of all Irish harps.

Thus, the harp is not only a symbol of resistance, but also the embodiment of the long-awaited desire for independence. It stands as a reminder of Ireland’s deep cultural roots and traditions.
